What is the Thyroid gland?

The thyroid gland (located at the front of the neck) is responsible for thyroid hormone regulation. If there is a problem, you may produce too much of the thyroid hormone (Overactive – Hyperthyroidism) or too little (Underactive – Hypothyroidism).

Why take this test?

This test is for people who are concerned that they may have a thyroid problem.

Early signs and symptoms of thyroid dysfunction may often be very non-specific. The common symptoms of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) may include:

  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Dry skin
  • Feeling cold
  • Puffy skin
  • Hair loss
  • Tiredness

Some signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) may include:

  • Fast heart rate
  • Anxiety
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Feeling hot
  • Hand tremors
  • Bulging, dry, puffy or irritated eyes
  • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)

Our advanced thyroid test also includes measurement of TPO antibodies. TPO is a protein inside the thyroid gland. TPO antibodies are antibodies made by our immune system that bind to TPO. The majority of people have some TPO antibodies in their blood. High levels of TPO antibodies can indicate that someone may have an autoimmune disease affecting the thyroid.

Why take a thyroid function test?

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ located at the base of your neck. It releases hormones that control metabolism and the way your body uses energy. It’s important to test your thyroid as it regulates vital body functions, including, breathing, heart rate, central and peripheral nervous systems, body weight, muscle strength, menstrual cycles, body temperature, cholesterol levels.

Dr Katie Stephens

The thyroid gland controls the body’s metabolism and can therefore cause symptoms that are felt all over when it is not working properly. This test can diagnose both overactive and underactive thyroid disease. As well as the hormones included in the ‘Thyroid Function Blood Test’, it also checks for TPO antibodies which, for some people with borderline results, can help predict the risk of developing an underactive thyroid in the future.
